POSITION
Belmonte in Sabina rises 756 meters above sea level, on a ridge of the Sabine mountains. Belmonte in Sabina, 17 km from Rieti and 1 hour from Rome. In Belmonte in Sabina stood Palatium, an ancient city of the Aborigines (mythology), reported by Dionysius of Halicarnassus just 4.5 km south of Rieti, along the Via Quinzia (corresponding to the stretch of the Salaria between the Rieti capital and Passo Corese). The city of Palatium was between Reate and Trebula (today Monteleone Sabino) and has recently been located. In the Grotte Zoccani area (near the hamlet of Seconde Ville), a pre-protohistoric cave settlement came to light, with finds relevant to a long frequentation of the site between the Eneolithic and the Bronze Age [8]. In the locality of Guardiola, near the Turano Valley, there was an ancient place of worship, complete with a menhir (now rolled down the valley). The locality continued to be frequented even in Roman times. The origins of the village are medieval, even if the available documents do not allow to fix the certain date. The first mentioning a Belmontis castrum date back to the beginning of the fourteenth century, when a fortified center was already established.
